Are you ready for a challenge?
Koko crater rim trail is one of the most breathtaking hikes for the East Side of Oahu. But, it is also one that will test your fear of heights. The trail begins at the Koko crater botanical gardens, which is tucked behind the golf course. After you park in the gravel parking lot, you will make your way through the gates to begin a short walk through the botanical gardens where you will follow a path to the right which will take you to the beginning of the trailhead.
Upon beginning the hike, you will notice many cacti and thorny bushes along the way. The whole hike is uncovered and can take between 4-5 hours depending on speed and breaks. Sunscreen/ hat/ sunglasses are highly recommended. I would highly recommend long pants and/or long socks to keep your legs from getting pricked by the cacti along the way. 25% of the hike will have cacti along the path.
Koko crater rim trail will take you in 270 degree circle with the mid point being the top of the Kokohead stairs look out point. The views go from deep in the valley of Hawaii Kai/ Kalama to Aina Haina in one direction and towards Waimanalo in the other direction. Once past the midpoint, you’ll be over looking the beautiful eastern coastline which include the Hanauma Bay, Halona Blowhole, Eternity Beach, Sandy Beach, and Makapuu Hike in the far distance. This hike includes narrow spaces and high elevations with some rock climbing involved (No straps or ropes are required). The hike is not suitable for children or pets. Make sure to keep your hand free and lots of water on hand for the journey that is to come. I am so fortunate to have conquered this hike, it definitely won’t be my last time.
Happy hiking friends! 🙂
