Oahu: Hanauma Bay Rock Bridge

One of the most well known and obvious beauties of Oahu is Hanauma Bay. This Bay is commonly know by its preservation of coral reefs, marine life, and great snorkeling. But, what most don’t know is the beauty from the trail right behind the Bay overlooking the ocean.

When you begin the hike you should see a bus stop at the top of the hill from the parking of Hanauma Bay. The hiking path is paved for a quarter of the ways and the hike takes about 3 hours round-trip. The best time to go is in the early morning or late evenings as the sun can be brutal as almost the whole hike is uncovered.

As you make your way to the top overlooking the bay and beyond you will see two dirt paths leading downhill to the left. The first path with take you directly to the bridge but has a rather steep decline and incline coming back. The second path which should be another 10 minutes on the same paved path and also on the left with a dirt path, this option will tack on an additional 45 minutes to your hike but can give you the best 360 degree views of the east side from the top. Both paths lead to the rock bridge.

The first path to the left you just follow all the way to the end of the second hill and down the cliffs. Once you get to the end of the terrain situated to the right of Hanauma Bay, you will see bushes which lead to rocky cliffs which lead down to a huge slab of slate which years ago broke of from the island and is now situated in the sea and is almost always visible no matter what the tides are like. Once you see the rock you can head towards it but beware of the current as people have lost their lives swimming and playing in the area. Once you get closer down the cliff you will see the rock bridge to your right. DO NOT STAND ON or SIT ON it as the foundation is cracked and it could fall at any moment. You should be weary of the waves as well and never turn your back to them. Just follow the path back up the hills and down to the car and you’re smooth on your way to your next adventure.

The hike is not suitable for kids/children and is medium to hard difficulty based on the terrain and decline/incline with complete sun exposure.

Please remove any trash that you bring in as there are no trash cans along the whole hike.

Happy Hiking Friends!!
